All of it was thanks to my parents, who usually got me movies from their own childhood and teen years. One of those older movies was The Black Cauldron, and I remember it being a favorite (and who knows, it may have sparked my love of all things fantasy!). Little did I know then that the movie was based on a book series called the The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. One of the main characters was a Princess named Eilonwy, a name that I've been deeply enchanted by!

While many believed Eilonwy to be an invention by Prydain, it actually has roots dating back at least to the 19th century. In a tale by Owen Wynne Jones, known more commonly by his bardic name of Glasynys, Eilonwy is the name of a mermaid's daughter. Another bard, Talhaiarn, used it as the name of one of his poems. The name itself comes from the Welsh poetic word eilon, meaning "deer, stag" or "song". The last part, wy, is a suffix used on the ends of river names, common in the 19th century.

In the books, she is a powerful enchantress like all of her line, including her mother Angharad (another splendid Welsh name), with red-gold hair and blue eyes. She is no damsel-in-distress, either, but instead is brave and brash, with a temper to match her fiery hair.

I think this is just a stunning name, perfect for fantasy lovers, families of Welsh descent, and those who wish to drift away from the "typical" set of Princess names.
Breehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10077890567365985025noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297006126725406985.post-32216396975195973242022-07-31T10:35:00.001-07:002022-07-31T10:35:55.507-07:00Cottagecore Baby Names

The Cottages of Auvers by Paul Cézanne

For those that aren't in the know, Cottagecore is a type of style that has taken the world by storm. Here's what the dictionary has to say on the word: "an aesthetic or imagery inspired by an old-fashioned, rural lifestyle, characterized by rustic décor and fashion, a revival of traditional handicrafts, etc.: For many, cottagecore can seem like a respite in our overstimulated world."

Cottagecore is a style I like for myself very much, and reminds me of Little Women + Studio Ghibli, reading by the fireplace, tending to the chickens, wearing vintage clothing and baking endless loaves of bread. Now, I've been pondering what sort of names could fit that style, and these are what I've come up with! What are your thoughts on Cottagecore, and do these names fit it? Today's choice is Elsa, a name which has always had a bit of popularity, but skyrocketed to fame after Frozen came out in 2013. One of the best qualities of Elsa, in my opinion, is its universality--it's used in Germany, Italy, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, English and many more countries, making it a great choice for a multilingual family. Elsa is soft but strong, and calls to mind snow and Northern lights.

Asta - Short, sweet and full of strength, Asta is a perfect alternative to Elsa. Asta is a Swedish, Danish and Norwegian short form of Astrid, which comes from Old Norse elements áss, meaning "God", and fríðr, which means "beautiful" or "beloved". While popular in Denmark, where it sits comfortably at #14, Asta is practically unused in other countries, making it ripe for the picking! However, if you're worried about it being too unusual, Asta has recently been used in the Syfy channel program Resident Alien on the character Asta Twelve-Trees, and for classic movie lovers, is most memorable as the name of the dog in the Thin Man films, which starred Myrna Loy and William Powell! A little trivia for name lovers: Asta was one of Roald Dahl's sisters, who was born later in the year after his sister Astri died of appendicitis. His other two? Alfhild and Else!

Elin - I've been seeing this lovely Nordic beauty bandied around more lately on name forums, and I have a feeling we'll be seeing a few more Elin's soon, but of course I highly doubt it will ever reach the level of fame that Elsa has attained. Elin, like Elsa, is a form of a classic name--Helen. It is also the Welsh form of Helen, alongside being the Swedish, Norwegian and Danish one. Elin ranked in the US from 2010 to 2016 until it vanished again. Notably, it was around this same time that professional golfer Tiger Woods was embroiled in a infidelity scandal, and eventual divorce, with his Swedish wife Elin Nordegren.

Nella - This name has been on my radar ever since I read The Lost Apothecary late last year, where it featured as the name of one of the protagonists. As I said in this post, it fits perfectly in with what's popular with girls names of the modern era, most notably the Ella-Ellie-Elle-Bella-Belle crowd, but with enough of a difference to stand out. Nella is sometimes used as a short form of Italian Antonella and Hungarian Kornélia, and occasionally on its own in Finland.

Leni - Leni is short, modern and stylish German form of Helene or Magdalena. It even has the celebrity seal of approval--Heidi Klum is the mother to an 18-year-old Leni. If you need any more proof of its appeal, which hovers somewhere between ultra-cool and tomboy, it has ranked recently in Austria, Germany and Israel, and a decade ago in France. My only word of warning is the association to Hitler golden-girl director and actress Leni Riefenstahl, which is probably one that most people don't even know about, unless you're a WWII buff like myself!

Lilias - I've had a love for this unusual name for many years now, after first coming across it while watching The Secret Garden as a child. The garden itself once belonged to Lilias, the deceased wife of Archibald Craven and mother to his son, Colin. Lilias is a Scottish form of Lillian, which started life most likely as a diminutive of Elizabeth. The first recorded instance of a Lilias dates back to around the 16th century! I can't get enough of this name and its soft, lilting sound. It's simply enchanting!
Breehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10077890567365985025noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297006126725406985.post-63996634969925010712022-04-26T10:35:00.001-07:002022-04-26T19:56:36.271-07:00From Tzeitel to Bielke: The Five Daughters of Tevye

(From L-R) Rosalind Harris as Tzeitel, Neva Small as Chava and Michele Marsh as Hodel from Fiddler on the Roof

When I very first saw Fiddler on the Roof, a 1971 film adaption of the musical based on a series of Yiddish stories written by Sholem Aleicham from 1894 to 1914, I fell in love. History has always been my passion, one my family kept stoked through books and movies. My mother always made sure my sister and I were exposed, especially to films, that would widen our cultural horizons. Ever since then, I've had a love and admiration for the Jewish culture, and of course that love connects to my other passion--names! Combining the two has led to this (very fun for me) post, featuring information about the names of Tevye's five strong-willed daughters. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it! Here they are, from oldest to youngest:

Tzeitel -
Origin: Yiddish
Gender: Female
Pronunciation: SZIGH-tull
Meaning: A diminutive of Sarah; "Princess"
Other Forms: Sarah, Sara, Sarai, Sally

This Yiddish diminutive of Hebrew Sarah is fun and spunky, thanks to that zipper-y Z in the forefront. In the Bible, Sarah is Abraham's wife and matriarch to the Jewish people. Most famously, she was barren until falling pregnant with Isaac at the age of ninety! Originally she was named Sarai, before God changed her name, like he did with Abraham. It is a rare name, like with most Yiddish names, but an extremely beautiful one with a wealth of history behind it. I'd love to see it revitalized and used on a modern girl.

Hodel -
Origin: Yiddish
Gender: Female
Pronunciation: HOH-dul
Meaning: Diminutive of Hode, a Yiddish short form of Hadassah; "Myrtle Tree"
Other Forms: Hode, Hadassah, Hadasa, Hadas

We have another beautiful Yiddish diminutive here with Hodel, which is actually a diminutive of a diminutive--Hode! Hode itself comes as a short form of one of my favorite Hebrew names, Hadassah. Hadassah means "myrtle tree", and is most famously the original name of Queen Esther from the Bible. Myrtles are found mostly in Upper Galilee and Golan Heights in Israel, and have several uses in folk medicine, ritual, incense and even perfume. It symbolizes wealth and prosperity, and in the first tractate, Berakhot, of the Seder Zeraim (Order of the Seeds) found in the Talmud and Mishnah it says "If you dream about myrtle, your property will prosper, and, if you don’t have property, you will inherit property".

Chava -
Origin: Hebrew
Gender: Female
Pronunciation: kha-VA, hah-VA
Meaning: "To Breathe"
Other Forms: Chawwa, Hava, Havah, Hawa, Eve, Eva, Efa, Ewa, Ava

Chava is a beautiful, classically Jewish name. Before there was Eve, there was Chava, or more accurately, Chawwah, which comes the Hebrew chawah, meaning "to breathe". It also might have roots in the word chaya, which means "to live". Eve of course, along with Adam, was one of the two first humans to live and the progenitors of the "original sin", when they disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. Despite the negative connotations, Eve and Chava have both been used in Christianity and Judaism for centuries. Two interesting namesakes are Chava Shapiro, a Russian-Jewish writer who was a pioneer of Hebrew women's literature and feminist literary criticism, and Chava Rosenfarb, a Holocaust survivor and author of Yiddish poetry and novels.

Shprintze -
Origin: Yiddish
Gender: Female
Pronunciation: SHPREEN-tzeh
Meaning: Possibly "To Hope"
Other Forms: Sphrintzel, possibly Esperanza

Very little is known about this light and bubbly name, except that could possibly be the Yiddish form of the Spanish Esperanza. Esperanza comes from the Late Latin name Sperantia, which comes from the word sperare, meaning "to hope". A lovely meaning for a lovely name.

Bielke -
Origin: Yiddish
Gender: Female
Pronunciation: BEEL-kuh, BILL-kuh
Meaning: "White"
Other Forms: Bielka, Beylke, Beyle, Baila, Běla

Bielke is thought to simply be a form of the Yiddish Beylke, a diminutive of Beyle. Beyle comes from the Slavic word belu meaning "white". Related names are Baila, and the Czech Běla, which has the same root.
Breehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10077890567365985025noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297006126725406985.post-80394844449696496632022-03-12T09:39:00.000-08:002022-03-12T09:39:39.134-08:00Otso

Some traditions remembered the bear spirit as a relative that fled into the forest and was transfigured by its powers. If a bear was to be killed, a sacred ritual called Peijainen was performed, wherein a feast was held for a slain animal. It's skull, which was believed to house its spirit, would then be kept in a sacred clearing, where it would bring tributes to it. The bear was the most revered figure in ancient Finnish culture.

Throughout history bears have been both worshipped and feared. In several Native American cultures, the bear is a symbol of rebirth because of its long hibernation and eventual re-emergence. In North America and some northern Asian cultures, it was associated with shamans, possibly because of their relative solitude. Thus, they are sometimes believed to be able to predict the future.

Artio, also known as Dea Artio, was an ancient Celtic bear goddess, though little is known about her. It is set in Ancient Rome, Pompeii to be exact, and follows the life of a prostitute. The main character is given the name Amara (her pimp tells her it is half way between love and bitter -- amare and amarum), but was born Timarete, in Aphidnai. Timarete means comes from the elements τιμη, meaning "honor, esteem", and ἀρετὴ, which means "virtue or excellence". It is also the name of a famous artist from Ancient Greece, who is sometimes credited as Thamyris. So it's no surprise that I am constantly trying to foist Irish names on everybody! Ronan is a favorite of mine and I love that it sounds both soft and strong, with the lovely unisex nickname of Ro. And I think the meaning is adorable: "little seal". It comes from the Old Irish rón (meaning seal) combined with a diminutive suffix. Recently, Ronan has seen a bit of an uptick in the US; in 2020 it ranked #269. It is also said to be an old Kurdish name meaning "strength" or "power", and might mean "rhythm, melody" in the Amazigh languages, and "eye" in Igbo. It's been sporadically on and off the top 1000 since 1980, ranking highest in 2009 at #362 and lowest in 1983 at #996. Currently, it sits in that sweet spot between rare and popular, at #656.

Anya Taylor-Joy is actually Anya-Josephine Taylor Joy, the youngest of six children, born of an English father and Argentine mother. She pronounces her name "ANN-ya", like the first part of Anna, as opposed to the more Russianized "AHN-ya". Other namesakes include Anya Chalotra, better known as Yennefer on Netflix's The Witcher, author Anya Seton, and Princess Ann, or Anya, played by Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday.

What are your thoughts on Anya?
Breehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10077890567365985025noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297006126725406985.post-1986088565934122622022-02-08T16:25:00.006-08:002022-02-08T16:25:56.679-08:00Names from the 2022 Winter Olympics

Kaori Sakamoto, who won bronze for her team

As I've mentioned before, I absolutely love watching the Olympics, mostly for all the interesting names! It's a fascinating read and one that will interest anybody with a love for names. Two babies are featured in the article, one is named Ruataupare Te Ropuhina Florence Whiley-Whaipooti and the other is called Hinekōrako. The latter's father had this to say about choosing her name:

"Hinekōrako’s name came to Dice as he was navigating a waka, a large traditional Māori sailing vessel, from Rarotonga in the Cook Islands back to Aotearoa. 'It was coming up to midnight. We came into a little storm. The temperature had dropped … there was thunder … Once we got through the storm we all turned around and just behind us there was this massive white rainbow … It was a lunar rainbow.'"

“'I told our navigator about it and he goes’ 'oh yeah, that’s a tohu (sign), that’s Hinekōrako’. In myth, Hinekōrako is also a taniwha (a water spirit), who lives between the spirit and living worlds. Dice wrote the name in his diary and decided that night, were he to ever have a daughter, she would be named Hinekōrako.

Names from Shady Hollow - My sister got an early copy for review of this adorable book called Shady Hollow by Juneau Black. It features anthropomorphic animal characters and a murder mystery, which main character Vera Vixen (she's a fox, if you didn't already guess) tries to solve. For me, those names are Japanese (and Irish and French!). Today's name is the lovely Noriko.

Like with most Asian names, Noriko can have many meanings depending on what characters you use to write it. Most commonly it is written using 典 (nori), meaning "rule, ceremony" or 紀 (nori), "chronicle", combined with 子 (ko), which means "child". To put it in a more poetic fashion would be to say it means "ceremonial child" or "benevolent child" or "noble child". In Japan, it entered the top ten twice, once in 1928 and the other in 1956.

In the 1930's, Noriko Awaya, born Nori, was a famous singer of ryūkōka (popular music), and was called the "Queen of Blues". In Japan, blues are different to ours, which originated in the Deep South; instead it used to refer to slow sad songs, called kayōkyoku.

Other namesakes include Noriko Arai, a Paralympic athlete from Japan who won gold and silver in her first two games in 1996 and 2000, actress and singer Noriko Watanabe, and one of the protagonists of the manga/novel/film Battle Royale. Today, Noriko seems to be considered old-fashioned in Japan.

What do you think of Noriko?
Breehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10077890567365985025noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3297006126725406985.post-84457540434222035212021-12-24T11:49:00.000-08:002021-12-24T11:49:21.678-08:00The Children of Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, Queen of Spain

Victoria Eugenie with her six children

Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, Queen of Spain was born Victoria Eugenie Julia Ena to Prince Henry of Battenberg and Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom.
