July

Image
The Saturday Evening Post, July 25th 1914 I'm so sorry I haven't been keeping up with the month posts but I've recently gotten a job and I'm still adjusting to it and trying to get back to doing anything outside of work! So I'm going to quickly try and catch up starting with July. July is the seventh month of the year. It was named after Julius Caesar, as it was the month he was born in, and was previously known as Quintilis, which meant "fifth" (the Romans originally had only ten months in the calendar - starting with "Martius" or March). He was born Gaius Julius Caesar of the ancient and powerful Julia family, which boasted the claim that they were derived from Iulus , a son of the Trojan Prince Aeneas, which in legend was said to be the son of Venus. The Romans celebrated the festivals Poplifugia and Ludi Apollinares, the latter celebrating the God Apollo  by playing "ludi" or games, which were held at the Circus Maximus, an

Inès, Nine and Violette, 2008 Nine and Violette - Inès de La Fressange (full name Inès Marie Lætitia Églantine Isabelle de Seignard de La Fressange)  is a model, aristocrat, and designer, known all around for her style. At the age of 51 she walked the runway for Gaultier and later Chanel. She was married to Luigi d'Urso until his death in 2006. They had two daughters, Nine Marie d'Urso and Violette Marie d'Urso. She also has two stepdaughters, India and Clotilde. Oscar Holly - I'm totally in love with actress Robin Tunney and her husband Nicky Marmet named their boy, Oscar Holly, which I discovered in this Nameberry post . I love seeing nature names used on boys! Lolita - It's always super surprising to see this name used in real life, even though I think the sound is absolutely beautiful. French actress Isabelle Huppert has a grown daughter, Lolita Chammah, who is also an actress. Her brothers are Lorezno and Angelo. Their father is Lebanese actor Ronald Ch

Royal Nicknames: From Frittie to Mapperl

Image
Princess Louise, Princess Maud, and Princess Victoria. Maud was nicknamed "Harry". In my many posts on royal names, I've found that the royals tend to come up with some very creative nicknames. This post is purely fun, a list of the nicknames I've amassed over the series and a few more I've yet to write about. And on this topic, what's the most creative or quirky nickname you've ever heard? Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha - "Ducky" Maud of Wales - Princess Maud was a lively tomboy and was called "Harry" affectionately William, Prince of Orange - "Wiwill" Princess Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha - "Baby Bee" Princess Alexandrine of Prussia - "Adini" Princess Elisabeth of Greece and Denmark - Called "Woolly" because of her thick, dark hair Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia - "Shvibzik" which meant "imp" Maximilian Emmanuel,

Minute Maid Park on Friday Avisail - I went to my first ever sports game this past Friday and absolutely loved it. One of the men on the other team, The White Sox, had the name Avisail, which I thought was really interesting. He's originally from Venezuela, but I can't find much on the name outside of him. Dutch Names - These Dutch birth announcements were so amazing, I loved almost every single one. My favorites were twins Alexander Bonifas Maurits and Valentijn Hendrik Jaap, Fleurance Maryse Juliette, Josephine Duveken Elizabeth, and Victoria Vesper. I thought it was interesting that the Dutch are also into animal names: a little boy was named Vos - Dutch for "fox". Interesting Sibset - The whole ball game was apart of one of our church's functions, and three little girls from our church sat behind us with my cousin. I finally got the opportunity to hear all their names - Waylon, Gigi, and Sylvie.

June

Image
Women's Home Companion, June 1916 June is the sixth month of the year. Junius or Iunius  is what the Romans called it, and there are a few differing tales as to how it's name came to be. Ovid gives two different ideas: one, that it came from the name of the Goddess Juno , wife of Jupiter, the supreme deity, and two, that it was inspired by the word iuniores which meant "younger ones", as it followed May, which might have been inspired by maiores , "elders". Ovid also claims that mid-May through mid-June is not an ideal time for marriages, as instructed by the high Priestess of Jupiter, but Plutarch thinks that the entirety of June is better than any of May for a wedding. There were multiple festivals held during June, one being the festival of the Goddess Bellona . Similar to Athena, Bellona, originally called Duellona, was the Goddess of the destructive and belligerent parts of war and consort to the God Mars. Often depicted holding a sword or spear, al

Hello, Summer!

Image
"Summer Clouds" by Charles Courtney Curran Much to my shock I forgot to even post my summer names! Summer is my least favorite season. I like it in theory and always dream it's gonna involve me sipping juice on the porch in some cute shorts and sunglasses, spending days lounging in the pool, and reading in the sun. Unfortunately it is never like that, and I've come to realize I'm never going to have a "movie" summer. In Texas summer is dry as a bone, without even a breath of air, opposed to winter where everything is wet. You burn yourself on the car and then on the seat belt, and then you melt all your makeup off trying to wait for the air conditioning to cool down. It's just no fun. But, that does not mean I will neglect my duty to post some summer names. Summer Names: Somerled - "Summer traveller" Suvi - "Summer" Natsuko - "Summer child" Udane - "Summer" Helios - "Sun"; Greek personif

The Gabors

Jolie is seated in the front and from l-r is Magda, Zsa Zsa, and Eva. Known as much for their beauty and style as for their multiple marriages, the three Gabor sisters, all actresses and socialites in their own rights, were an interesting bunch. Born in Hungary to  Vilmos Gábor, a soldier, and Janka "Jolie" Tillman, her nickname being the French word for "pretty", though she purported her name was Jancsi, a name for boys', saying that it was because her parents were so eager to have one. Jolie was born to a Jewish couple from Galicia, and owned a jewelry shop called "The Diamond House". She had two older sisters, Zseni "Janette", and Dora, along with a younger sister Rozalie "Rozsika", and a younger brother Sebastian. Jolie eventually divorced  Vilmos  and would go on to marry twice more. They narrowly escaped Hungary in WWII. The Gabor sisters are: Magdolna "Magda" -  Magda, the eldest and least known of the sis

May

Image
The American, May, 1923 I'm sorry I didn't actually get to post this in May but right when I was going to I got really ill and couldn't even get on the computer. May is the fifth month of the year. May was named for the Greek Goddess Maia , a daughter of Atlas, a Pleiade, and the mother of the God Hermes, whose Roman counter part was the fertility Goddess Bona Dea, whose festivals were held during the month. The festival allowed women to make blood sacrifices and use strong wines, which was forbidden at the time. Men were not allowed to know her "mysteries" or her true name. Ovid gives us another idea - that May came from the Latin word maiores , which meant "elders", and that the following month, June, was named for the "young people". The birthstone for May is the emerald , and the birth flower is the lily -of-the-valley and the common hawthorn . Epigaea repens, commonly referred to as the mayflower , is for us North Americans, the si

Idina

Image
Lady Idina Sackville Origin: Possibly Hebrew Gender: Female Meaning: Possibly "delicate" or "gentle" Pronunciation: EYE-deen-uh Other forms: Possibly Adina or Edina Mezzo-soprano Idina Menzel has been on the verge of really breaking into common knowledge for years now, originating the roles of Maureen Johnson and playing her in the film version of Broadway hit "Rent", and Elphaba in "Wicked", which won her a Tony, and playing the role of Patrick Dempsey's fiancee in Disney's "Enchanted", but it wasn't really until she voiced the character of Princess Elsa in "Frozen" that she really hit it big. Born in New York, Menzel comes from a Jewish family, and started working as a wedding and bar mitzvah singer at 15. She attended the Tisch Schools of the Arts and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama. But where did that name come from? Well, the most probable option is that it comes from Adina, which mea

"The Penitent Magdalene" by Tintoretto Okay, so here's the truth about me: I'm super picky about what names I would actually consider, so picky that at any given moment I have only about 2-3 names for boys and girls I actually love and would give to a child, so my list of names I'd like others to use is definitely longer. I have decided to set them free, and list what's so great about them, and feature a few combos, in the hopes that others will use them and find inspiration in them! So here is part one of a probably pretty long series, that I have split up into boy's and girl's. Magdalene - Origin: Hebrew Gender: Female Meaning: A title meaning "Of Magdala", Magdala meant "tower" Pronunciation: MAG-da-len Other forms: Magda, Malene, Magdolna Malin, Magali, Madeleine, Magdalena Combos: Cecily Magdalene, Magdalene Rose, Thea/Theodora Magdalene, Magdalene Plum. Beautiful, wonderful, forgotten Magdalene. Saint Mary Magdal

Thadéline

Image
Origin : Unknown, possibly Germanic Gender : Female Meaning : N/A Pronunciation : N/A Other forms : N/A Thank you to Winter Flodman-Cash for suggesting Thadéline! I always love discovering new and unusual names, and love trying to find where they come from, so I was excited to do some research on Thadéline. To me, Thadéline looks like a form of the Ancient Germanic Theudelinda, also sometimes seen as Theodelinda or Dietlinde, which comes from theud , "people", and linde , "soft, tender". I would pronounce it either as "THAD-day-leen" or "TAH-day-leen". Another idea is that is possibly just an elaborate feminine form of Thaddeus, meaning something like "heart". Theodelinda was a Queen of the Lombards , and is credited as building churches in Tuscany and Lombardy, after converting her second husband, Agilulf , to Catholicism. Either way, it is a beautiful name! Thanks for bringing this one to my attention.

Praxis and Her Sisters

Image
"Saint Praxidis" by Vermeer Origin : Greek Gender : Female Meaning : "Practical", or "action" Pronunciation : N/A Other forms : Praxilla, Praxedes/Praxedis/Praxidis,  Praxède/ Praxéda, Praxed, Prassede Thank you to Winter Flodman-Cash for suggesting Praxis (and her many other forms)! Praxis is a Greek name meaning "practical", and is an epithet for the Goddess Aphrodite, and in that sense it is thought to mean more "action" or "active", as in the action of sexual intercourse. I'm not sure on a pronunciation, but I figured it could be something like "prah-ZEES", or the way I automatically say it, "PRACK-sus". Praxis is also the word used for the practice of faith and worship for the Eastern Orthodox church, and "The Praxis School" is a school of Marxist philosophy. You must pass a Praxis test to become a certified teacher in the United States. Praxis is also a genus of moth in the

April

Image
La Vie Parisienne, April 26, 1924 April is the fourth month of the year. The Romans called it  Aprillis , thought to come from the verb apeirre , meaning "to open", in reference to the opening and flowering of plants. April was sacred to the Goddess Venus , her festival, Veneralia, being celebrated on the first day of the month, and it was thought that maybe April was originally Aphrillis , taken from her Greek counter-part Aphrodite . The Anglo-Saxons knew April as   ēastre-monaþ , named after the Goddess Eostre , and this word,  ēastre, later became Easter , the name of the Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. St. Mark 's Eve takes place on the 24th, and superstition says that the ghosts of the people doomed to die that year will pass into the local church. The Finnish word for April is huhtikku , meaning "slash-and-burn moon", referencing the slashing and burning of plants to make fields.  The birth flower for April is the

The Graces: From Thalia to Hegemone

Image
"Graces" by Agita Keiri The Graces, also known as the Charites, were the Goddesses of charm, beauty, fertility, nature, and human creativity, and are usually referred to as only three: Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia. Usually they are said to be daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, a Goddess portrayed as a mermaid. They have also been credited as daughters of Dionysus and Aphrodite, or Helios and the naiad Aegle. However, there are many other minor Goddesses named as Graces, and I will be covering their names, along with the common three. Firstly I will list their name, then the meaning, and finally what they are the Goddess of. Aglaea - "Splendor, beauty" - Splendor, beauty, glory, adornment Euphrosyne or Euthymia - "Mirth, meriment" and "In good spirits" - Joy and mirth and the incarnation of beauty and grace Thalia - "To blossom" - Abundance, festivity, and banquets; Thalia is also the muse of comedy and pastoral poetry Cleta -

Bond Girls Pt. 1

Image
Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder in "Dr. No" Although Bond Girls are unfortunately portrayed as little more than sexual objects, I have to say that I love them and their ridiculous names. My favorite name out of all them is probably Eve Moneypenny (and yes, you can fight me about whether or not she really is a "Bond girl"), or Vesper Lynd . In these posts I'll only be featuring the names from the films, but I might do the ones from the books at a later date. This is going to be really long, so I apologize in advance. The names in parenthesis are the names of the actresses. Art by Junichi Nakahara So I'm test running this idea of doing (or trying to do) a question every week. Deciding to do more of these will ultimately rest on how many people actually reply to the question so we'll see! For my very first question of the week the topic is flower names: what are some flower names that are a little too unusual for actual use, but you love anyways? My favorite right now is Myosotis , which was one of the little girl's middle names in this beautifully named sibset on Jolis Prenoms . Myosotis means "mouse's ear" in Greek, because of the shape of the leaves, and is the genus of the forget-me-not flower. Another love of mine is Hyacinth , which I like for both boys and girls. Hyacinth in Greek mythology, was a lover of Apollo, who made the flower out of his blood. Edelweiss is one I see being thrown around a lot these days, and it immediately brings the song from "The Sound of Music" to mind. They're beautiful whit

Zoé with Ugolin and Ugoline Ugoline & Ugolin  - Zoé Talon, comtesse du Cayla, maîtresse-en-titre to King Louis XVIII, had two children by her husband, a boy and girl named Ugolin and Ugoline. Ugolin is apparently a form of Ugolino, which itself is a diminutive of Ugo, the Italian form of Hugo. Helmi - For 2015, among the Finnish speaking population of Finland, Helmi ranked number six for girls. Helmi is not only a nickname for Vilhelmina or Vilhelmiina, it also means "pearl" in Finnish. Emil - For the Swedish speaking minority of Finland, Emil was number one for boys. Emil comes from the Roman family name Aemilius, which comes from the Latin aemulus which means "rival". Hilkka Talvikki - Seen in a Finnish birth announcement, Hilkka means "bonnet" or "hood", while Talvikki means "wintergreen".

March

Image
The Saturday Evening Post, March 20, 1943 March is the third month of the year. The name of March comes from the Latin Martius, the first month in the earliest Roman calendar. It was named for the Mars , the Roman God of war and a guardian of agriculture, who was believed to be a common ancestor of the Romans through the founders Remus and Romulus. Martius was the beginning of both agriculture and warfare season, perfect for the God of both. In Slovene, the traditional name is  sušec , which refers to the ground finally becoming dry enough to cultivate. In Ukranian Czech, and Slovene, there are other names, all referring to it as " birch month".  The birth flower for March is the daffodil , also known as the narcissus . Gemstones are aquamarine and bloodstone. Zodiac signs are Pisces  and Aries , the ram that provided the golden fleece. March's most famous holiday is St. Patrick 's Day, a celebration and feast day for the Irish saint. It celebrates the day St.

Lucia

Image
Saint Lucia by Sassoferrato Origin : Latin Gender : Female Meaning : "Light" Pronunciation : loo-CHEE-uh, loo-SEE-uh, LOO-sha Other forms : Lucy, Luzia Lucia is one of my absolute favorites, but alas I have not a speck of Italian or Spanish blood (though I do have German, so it could work out if I wanted). Lucia is originally the feminine form of Lucius, a Roman praenomen (given name) which came from the Latin lux  - "light". It is surprisingly ranked #230 in the US, and is, deservedly, reigning as the top name in Spain right now. As you can see it has all sorts of different pronunciations floating around, but to me, the most beautiful is the Italian "loo-CHEE-uh". Saint Lucia was a martyr from 4th-century Syracuse - though she is more commonly known as Saint Lucy - and is the patron Saint of the blind, writers, martyrs, epidemics, and Syracuse, among many others. Her mother's name was Eutychia, which many take as proof she came from a Greek

Princesses Irene, Victoria, Elisabeth, and Alix of Hesse - 1885 -Slight spoilers ahead for "The Witch"- Alix - I love this short but regal form of Alice. I've seen that it can be pronounced either ay-LEEKS or ah-LEEKS, though I'm not sure which is correct, or if they are both legitimate pronunciations. Alexandra Feodorovna was originally Alix of Hesse. Her full name was Victoria Alix Helena Louise Beatrice. Thomasin, Caleb, Mercy, Jonas, and Samuel - I'm a horror film junkie, and was so excited when I first saw the posters and trailers for "The Witch". I finally got to see it Saturday and it was really good (go see it!). The eldest daughter in the movie is named Thomasin, which I was pleasantly surprised by. The other children are Caleb, twins Mercy and Jonas, and baby Samuel. I thought they were all lovely names, especially together. Tomboy: Boys' Nicknames for Girls

Image
Toby Wing (born Martha Virginia) I've noticed a lot of people really like boy or at least boyish nicknames for girls here lately, and as a society this says a lot about us. It all boils down to this: masculine = good, feminine = bad, even for women. Boys aren't allowed to be feminine, and it has contributed to an ideal of hyper masculinity, which not only damages us women, but boys too. And of course it's a good thing if little girls prefer playing in the mud to painting their nails or playing with dolls, when all of these things should not only be available, but accepted and endorsed for all people and children, regardless of gender. I'm not exempt from this trend, though.  My favorite name right now is Josephine, and I'm certain if I had one I'd call her Jo or Joey half the time. I think it's something worth thinking about, and talking about, though naming is just a ripple in the pool of gender politics. But I'm going to throw politics to the
